The International Space Station (ISS), a remarkable feat of engineering and international cooperation, recently marked 15 years of uninterrupted human presence in space. This milestone, achieved on November 2, 2015, highlights the incredible journey of exploration and scientific discovery that began when the first permanent crew moved in back in 2000.

A Truly International Effort
Since its inception, the ISS has hosted 220 crew members from 17 different nations, reflecting the collaborative spirit of space exploration. While the majority of these astronauts have been American, thanks to the numerous space shuttle missions that helped assemble the station, Russia has sent the second-highest number of crew members. Canada and Japan share the third spot in this unique ranking of space travelers. Notably, British astronaut Tim Peake is set to join this elite group, becoming the first UK astronaut to visit the ISS when he embarks on his six-month mission to conduct scientific experiments.
Life Aboard the ISS
Orbiting the Earth at an altitude of about 240 miles (386 kilometers) and traveling at a staggering 17,150 miles per hour (27,600 kilometers per hour), the ISS is one of the brightest objects in the night sky, often visible without the aid of a telescope. The station itself has evolved significantly over the years, expanding from its original three modules to the current 13-room structure, with a total mass approaching 450 tonnes – roughly the size of a Boeing 747 in terms of pressurized volume.
Science and Exploration
The station serves as a vital laboratory for research in microgravity and space sciences. Over the past 15 years, astronauts have conducted over 1,760 experiments, consumed more than 26,500 meals, and completed 189 spacewalks to assemble and maintain the station. These spacewalks, which allow astronauts to work outside the station, have been crucial for its assembly and upkeep, with the 190th planned for this Friday.
Pushing Human Limits
Perhaps the most critical mission on the ISS is learning how to keep humans alive in the harsh environment of space. Commander Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko are currently nearing the end of a historic one-year mission, a critical step in preparing humans for longer journeys, such as missions to Mars. While Russian cosmonauts have previously spent similar durations aboard the now-decommissioned Mir space station, this marks the first time an American has attempted such a prolonged stay in space.
